What We Do | DSP Empowerment Awards

About the Direct Support Professional (DSP) Empowerment Awards

Direct support professionals (DSPs) deliver on the promise of the Lanterman Act, providing essential support that empowers Californians with IDD and their families to live safely in their homes and thrive in their communities. CDSA is committed to our direct support workforce as the backbone of disability services. Alongside our nonprofit education arm, the California Disability Services Institute (“The Institute”), we host the Direct Support Professional Empowerment Awards (DSPEA) to uplift our workforce. DSPEA celebrates exceptional California DSPs who demonstrate talent, dedication, and professionalism in direct support.

Member organizations are eligible to nominate one frontline DSP per organization. Awardees are selected by The Institute Board of Directors and honored at CDSA Aligned conference in the fall. DSPEA winners are dedicated to service, excelling at person-centeredness, relationship building, initiative, and advancement of the direct support field.

CDSA is proud to showcase the phenomenal DSPs who have won our Empowerment Awards and the organizations who nominated them. These talented individuals will continue to make a difference in their communities throughout their careers.

I feel incredibly honored to have received one of five DSP Empowerment Awards, with my closest friends and family by my side. I am thankful to CDSA for the opportunity to speak publicly about my personal experience as a DSP and how it has shaped my perspective of life. I was met with an outpouring of support and kindness from other attendees, most of whom I had never met before. The DSPEA ceremony was a beautiful experience that I will cherish endlessly.
